A trending video shows the moment police fired teargas at protesters who gathered at the Lekki toll gate following the candlelight procession of late Nigerian singer, Mohbad.
Recall that on the evening of the 21st of September 2023, youths gathered in numbers to pay tribute to the ex-Marlian Music signee who passed on at the age of 27.
However, following the candlelight procession that ended at around 7:30 pm at Muri Okunola Park as confirmed by the notable OAP, Dotun, youths relocated to the Lekki toll gate.
The Nigeria Police Force became involved at past 10 p.m. while traffic congestion built up, pleading with the youths to go home as an act of love to the late singer.
Following tireless efforts, the police fired multiple canisters of teargas at the protesters to disperse the gathering, leaving a number of youths injured.
This has since divided the internet as many argued that the gathering was harmless while others supported the police for dispersing the gathering at the Lekki toll gate.
An X ( Twitter) user, Eniola Unlimited wrote, âCandle light procession in honour of Mohbad ended at Muri Okunola park and hours later, some converged at the Lekki toll gate?? People smoking and drinking as if they are celebrating a big victory!!! Shame. Shooting and killing by Nigerian Army during Endsars protest was condemned. Then what do we say about this?? This injury is a lot though đđđ.â
Another user with a contrary view stated, âOne single tear gas would have passed the right message and make it clear. But no, sporadic shooting of tear gas is very okay, because truly wetin we dey actually do for Lekki Toll Gate? Lol. Till now, I donât believe that was from the government. Snake get hands inside. So sad.â
